Relief from Acid Reflux
There are several changes you can make to your life to cut down on the occurrence of acid reflux. Either make some changes or make all of the changes to ensure that you are suffering less from the effects of acid reflux.
1. Make some important lifestyle changes – Sit upright while eating. This will ensure that your food is being allowed to fully travel down to your stomach before digestion begins. If you eat while reclined on a couch or lying down, acid reflux has more of a chance to occur. Avoid exercise or physical exertion just after having a meal or snack. Avoid stressful situations. Lose weight and trim up.
2. Choose to make dietary changes – More specifically, when and how often you are eating has an immediate effect on whether or not your acid reflux will act up. Eat several small meals throughout the day instead of three large meals. Avoid these types of foods: Fatty or fried foods, heavily spiced or seasoned foods, onions, garlic, orange juice, tomato juice, alcohol, coffee and chocolate.
3. Most importantly, be proactive – This means that you should not just treat the symptoms of acid reflux. Be aware of what you are eating and whether or not it disagrees with you. Stay away from foods that cause the symptoms. Understand that every time you have the symptoms, permanent damage is being done to your esophagus; some of this damage can be repaired after a while if you eliminate the occurrence of acid reflux. It’s different for everyone, but you can have the control you need if you become aware of what you are eating and whether or not it agrees with you.
